Married.  Stay at home mom.  My husband and I have 2 daughters and 4 sons.  And I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

With a seemingly impossible long-term goal of running a sub 3 hour marathon, the following scriptures give me hope:

In your patience possess ye your souls. Luke 21:19

But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. James 1:4

But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. Romans 8:25

Submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord.         Mosiah 24:15

And Ezra teaches that discipline and patience are born of disappointment.

Welcome to the blog! Are you Michelle's training partner?

From Lybi on Tue, Nov 06, 2007 at 22:22:16

Hey Jamie! Welcome to the blog. So you are pregnant? Congratulations! This is awesome. I am also hoping to be able to run through my next pregnancy (if that happens).

Fast Running Mommy on the blog has run through several pregnancies, so she'd be a good one to ask if you have questions.

How many weekly miles were you getting before the pregnancy?

Great job on your run, by the way. Good pace for 7 miles!

From Michelle on Tue, Nov 06, 2007 at 23:27:34

Welcome to the blog! Love to have more mom's with busy lives to motivate us!

From Jamie on Tue, Nov 06, 2007 at 23:43:05

Sasha, thanks for the welcome. I'm excited to join you.

Lybi, I'm not pregnant yet...I'll keep you updated. My peak milage weeks before St.George were in the 60's. Right now, I'm doing about 45ish.

Michelle, I'm headed to bed so that I can meet you tomorrow! Bring on the speed-work, baby. Fingers crossed...my lungs and back will be in great shape for tomorrow's run!

From josse on Wed, Nov 07, 2007 at 09:39:58

good to see you on the blog. Look forward to training with you more.

Hi Jamie, Welcome to the blog! I am Tom's wife. I told him he runs like girls! (OK, so VERY SPEEDY Girls!) I wish I were speedy enough to join you all. But even if I were I'm not sure I could do that early morning stuff! It will be good blogging with you!

From Tom on Wed, Nov 07, 2007 at 10:43:44

Welcome to the blog Jamie! It's always great to have more people on the blog from down Spanish Fork way that I actually know. You've been running great the last few weeks. Hey if I can just manage to keep up with all you speedster girls I'll be happy to accept the "runs like girls" title.

From MichelleL on Wed, Nov 07, 2007 at 13:29:06

Michelle-

Jamie is not stalking you, she thought you were me? Well we could be twins right?

Jamie-Thanks so much for joining the blog! It is wonderful to find a motivating, positive running partner like yourself, and you joining the blog just makes it that much better.

Now just slow down on the baby making talk and start talking to hubby instead about doing Painter's 1/2 marathon in St. G first! It can be our last hurrah (yours before baby, mine before tax season).

From Jamie on Wed, Nov 07, 2007 at 15:53:53

Michelle,

I am happy to join the blog. Great motivation for putting in all those "baby miles."

Can't slow down the baby making talk...too late for that! One will coming at will. You never know, it may be a while.

Good run this morning! Feels good to be a bit speedier now and then.

Josse, Tom, and Kim...

Good to have a few more helping me get out of bed every morning. Thanks!

Howdy! Wow, moms that run are the coolest! I know that's one of the reasons I started. Heard my mom talk about her 3:42 marathon back in the day. I only hope one day I can kick her butt and shatter that time! :) Keep up the great work and look forward to hearing more from you!

Best thing about this morning:  my back and lungs were feeling pretty good.  I am enjoying my group runs.  It's good to have people to meet up with (now that Sarah's gone).

Ran with Michelle, Tom and Amber today.  For our speed work-out, we did 8X800 repeats.  I was a bit lazy on a couple of the repeats...I'm finding it difficult to be motivated without a marathon to train for.  I almost don't care.  I enjoy being a bit speedy one day out of the week, however, pushing my limits is another story.  A part of me feels like I'm done training for the season, having already run St. George last month.  Anyhow...

Michelle led most of the time.  She's pretty intense and I sometimes wonder if I ought to be more serious...and putting in more miles.  I think I am fairly content with what I'm doing for now.

Suggestions from Sasha:  Mon-Sat your day must not end until you've run at least 8 miles. The pace does not matter, as long as it is comfortable. If you feel good, go more. A tempo run of 3-5 miles once a week at 6:40 pace is a good idea. A couple of other days do strides (quick pickups for about 15-20 seconds) in the middle of your easy runs. Try to race frequently.

Right now I would focus on running 6 days a week with no less than 8 miles a day, most of it aerobic. Occasional tempo runs and strides are fine.

Phillip decided to take the day off of work, which allowed me to run up in Provo today with Michelle, Sasha, and Ted.  It was great to join an experienced group of runners.  Everyday, I learn more about those I run with (on a personal level...and as athletes who share one of my passions).

Warm up at 6am with Michelle for about 20 minutes; I'm guessing that it was about 2.25 miles. The following are some of the times recorded while running the course (thanks to Michelle):

Mile/Split:

#1 7:15

#2 7:30

#3 6:54

#4 7:15

#5 7:08  With a turn around

#6 6:58

#7 6:33(?)

#8 7:03

#9 6:58  I begin to struggle during the next mile. Michelle is in front...Ted and Sasha oblige to pace. Sasha mentions that I ought to close the small gap that is developing...that it will help me stay with them. I find it difficult to muster the umpf.  (From Michelle's log entry, she made it sound as though she was struggling just as much. There certainly is something to be said for experience and metal determination.)  Sasha attempts to relay to me the course "turn around point" as they begin to pull away.

#10-13  I've misunderstood where the turn-around point is.  I approach the bridge past Macey's but didn't remember Sasha saying that it should have been that far and that I should cross over the bridge. (To be honest, there is a fair amount he said to me that I didn't hear.  In part because of his accent and also because I was not longer running right next to him.)  So I turn around, just short of the bridge wondering if they had jumped up onto State Street.  I figured there was a chance that I might see which direction they were taking back. I never do see them but continue on State back to Sasha's house.  I see them; they finish in front of Sasha's home the same time I do.

I finish the tempo in 1:30.

Sasha believes that I'm close to 13 miles for my distance...perhaps just short.  He believes I'm under a 3hr marathon pace.  That's a bit hard to believe...

Note:  Ran around 11miles back on the 22nd of October (I think with Michelle), which is the longest run I have done since St.George.  Dropping my miles has probably hurt my endurance a bit but I am still satisfied that I worked hard and had a great time rubbing shoulders (at least for most of the run) with amazing athletes!  Hope to do it again soon.

I am so sorry that the turn around was confusing so you didn't get an accurate 13.1 in, but it was a great long run and amazing tempo run. I agree with Sasha on the sub 3-hour, too. In my opinion, you would just need to practice racing some races, with risk-taking, etc. Baby may delay all this, but it's great that you are in such great shape as you approach pregnancy. Look for an email from me re: monday and next week.

No, I ran on a trail in Provo that was about 9.5 miles. How was your run?

From Tom on Sun, Nov 11, 2007 at 10:19:01

Great job on this run Jamie! From what I've seen I agree with Sasha that your easily capable of a sub-3 marathon with just a little fine tuning. I'm sure this will happen sooner or later (perhaps after a baby 'break').

L.A. Freeway today...loved it (as always).  I lead and felt strong the whole time; it's been too long since I last ran this trail.  Perhaps three months or so...I have missed it.  Ali joined me.  She pushed herself hard on the up-hill.  For no more than she's run it, she kicks trash on the hills!

Lisa Pratt (BYU) showed up for the workout and brought a former BYU cross-country friend with her (by the name of Kristie...don't know her last name).  It has been a while since I've seen Lisa at the runs.  She would have been ahead the whole time, had Kristie been a stronger hill runner.  Lisa dropped back for Kristie, about a mile from Rock Canyon.

With the up-hill done, I decided to set my pace into cruise-control and get back to the park.  I was to meet-up with Phillip and his family right after my run (Gina's in town).  Ran from the Rock Canyon parking lot back to my car in 16:?? minutes.  Should have paid more attention to the seconds on my watch.  Ali wasn't up for the speedier down-hill (she dropped back a bit and I didn't see her again until she finished at the park).

Total time: 1:17:52  Moderate effort.  No muscle soreness this week.  Haven't been sore since St. George...perhaps I ought to do something about that!

I used to run the L.A. Freeway all of the time when I lived in Provo. I know they have changed that trail since I ran on it last, around the part where the three sisters and Grand Father hills were, and I hear they tore out the tree of life too.

I know Lisa too, her name used to be Antonelli. She is one tough chicka, or at least she used to be.

Nice run on the Freeway, I always figured it was about 9.5-10 miles from Center Street and 900 East and back to that same park. Although, everyone always claimed that it was more like 12 miles. Only if you count effort though right!

From Jamie on Sun, Nov 11, 2007 at 09:00:58

James, it's different toward the start of the trail as well(where you jump up on the bench).

Not sure on the exact number of miles...there is something to be said for being generous (considering the up-hill effort).

Good to hear from someone who knows the trail well; did you run with the Sojourners a lot when you lived in Provo?

From MichelleL on Sun, Nov 11, 2007 at 10:24:50

I read your goals - yoga is awesome, and it won't take as long as you think to make progress, especially if you start in a beginner's course or with a beginner's DVD. Classes are great for motivation and DVDs are excellent for feeling comfortable. I started practicing yoga in July of 2005 - It truly changed my life. By December of '05, I was pretty darn flexible. Unfortunately, I stopped practicing for a little while this year (working full time and taking 3 college courses is pretty time consuming), and I regret it a lot! I started taking voice lessons last week and the posture made me think of and miss yoga. So, I started practicing again week, whoohoo!

From Jamie on Mon, Nov 12, 2007 at 16:50:15

Cassandra, that is encouraging. Will you recommend a good DVD?

From James on Mon, Nov 12, 2007 at 21:11:43

Jamie,

To answer your question from the other day, yes I did run with the Sojourner's a lot. The guys that I ran with are mostly non existent anymore (Damon Cox, John Harmon, Jerry Henley, Kale Fisher, Ron Greenwood, and Golden Harper) We were big on all of the trails in Utah County. I ran L.A. Freeway a lot because it was close to my house.

From Jamie on Mon, Nov 12, 2007 at 22:55:36

James, I know three of the men you mentioned...Damon, John (he ran with the Sojourners two Saturday's ago), and Golden. Anyhow, good to know.

From Lybi on Mon, Nov 12, 2007 at 23:51:51

Wow, that is the definition of a "true runner". Anyone who runs an "easy 10".

That is so cool that you just started piano! Sounds like you have a lot of interests and passion. Awesome.

You may not know this, but Tom plays a mean piano. You should hear him sometime.

Hope you are starting to play some fun Christmas music! Are you taking lessons?

BTW, I love ballroom dancing, reading, and riding horses too! My hubby was on the BYU ballroom dance team.

From Jamie on Tue, Nov 13, 2007 at 09:54:57

Lybi, I'm really enjoying the piano. I really am very green though. I've just finished the Piano Adventure (Basic Method) Primer book. I'm starting from scratch. No lessons, just me. In your opinion, is it a bad idea not to have an instructor? I'm just wondering if I'll develop some pretty bad habits, without knowing it, that are hard to break. I knew that Tom is musically inclined, but was unaware that he plays the piano. I'll have to ask him about it.

It's awesome that you husband was on the BYU ballroom dance team, I'm super jealous. I danced for UVSC's ballroom team, but never toured with it. I miss it so much.

My dad is a horse trainer and riding instructor. I grew up riding. I deal with some pretty nasty allergies and asthma at times, but I truly love it. I ride once a week (usually every Friday). Anyhow...good chatting!

From Tom on Tue, Nov 13, 2007 at 10:23:38

Gee Lybi thanks for the plug! However I have to confess that Lybi has never actually heard me play and I don't know if "mean piano" quite applies. More likely my playing has been known to make those listening a little angry and maybe even 'mean'.

FWIW I think a good instructor is invaluable, especially with helping to avoid learning the bad habits like you mentioned. Alot of my playing is self-taught and I'm a like a poster boy for playing with most every bad habit there is. I suppose learning as an adult vs as a child you have more discipline so perhaps you could do fine going it alone but my feeling is that a good instructor is still the best bet if you can afford it.

From Jamie on Tue, Nov 13, 2007 at 18:55:42

Good to know, Tom. Thanks for the info.

Met up with Tom and Michelle for a 4 mile tempo/speed workout today.

Warmed up for 25 minutes.

Ended up liking the route:

Going up the hill on Scenic Drive, stop on the east corner of the first street (where you are able to make a left) and turn around.

Run down the hill (north) on Scenic Drive.

Left onto Center Street (west) and through the Main Street traffic light.

Left onto 630 West by S.F. High (south).

Left onto Main Street (north).

End at the North corner of the Library (just short of the Center Street traffic light).

Mile Splits:

#1  6:14

#2  6:20

#3  6:41

#4  6:29

time: 25:44 (average 6:26)

Effort was somewhere between Threshold and VO2 Max.

Started the run slower than last time.  Moved into what felt like a comfortable tempo.  Hit a few threshold miles...then the last part of the run was labored breathing just under 7 minute pace.  The group hung back a number of times toward the end (to help me) and I needed it.  Last mile was 6:50.  Two weeks pregnant.

Sasha's advice: a faster leg turn-over and focus...don't let my mind wander.

Today's time was very close to my time for the second half of St. George.  But in the marathon, the second half felt much easier.  The hills in the marathon certainly helped; the Uneventful half course is fairly flat.

I was surprised that it felt as hard as it did for the time (1:34:29 - average of 7:13).

Note:  I'm guessing that the last time I ran this (a week and a half ago) I was a good half mile short of 13.1 miles.

Great job today Jamie, way to gut it out tough those last couple of hard miles. I think you're going to have a killer race on Thursday.

Tom, thanks for the encouragement. It makes a difference to run with a good group. Hope Thursday goes well...fingers crossed.

From Tom on Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 18:25:08

Jamie I have a challenge for you for the Thursday race. Turns out an old high school buddy of mine (also a HS friend of Terry who you met Saturday) is running the race. His name is Robert Blauer.

He just emailed me asking if I was running the Turkey Trot. I told him I wasn't, but then challenged him to NOT get chicked and then specifically told him about you and described you to him so he'd know who to watch out for.

So my challenge to you is...KICK HIS BUTT!!! Wish I had a picture to show you or something so you'd know exactly who he is. He's maybe an inch taller than me, similar build, maybe more muscular in the arms/shoulders, lighter/sandy thin (dare I say balding) hair.

From Jamie on Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 18:34:59

Challenge accepted!

By the way, you're way too generous in grouping yourself with me as also "struggling." But I appreciate your modesty.

From MichelleL on Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 19:23:33

Ooh, Jamie, this challenge sounds fun! I think that this 4 miler will go really well for you, like your training has been perfect for the speed you need to run for this race. Your 4 mile tempo last week went really well, and you should be able to do the race faster. I'll see you tomorrow!

Happy Thanksgiving!  I enjoyed this race and hope to do it again and again.  Alexis and Luke ran their divisions.  Alexis was 11th Female for the 400meter.  Luke was 4th Male for the 100meter.  It ended up being a lot of fun...despite the cold temperatures.  I feel pretty good about my time but have a lot to learn about racing (my splits weren't as even as they could have been).  It felt like a good tempo run.  I took 5th Overall Open Women and 1st in my division (25-29).  Came away with 2 turkeys and a pie!  Bring on the grub; it's chow time!

Here's how this morning went:

Warmed-up (a very relative term) for about 2 miles.

Just after the start, the men and women merged into one body of racers and I saw Sasha.  He told me I was starting too fast.  It startled me and I eased the pace up.  I heard Ted and James (his son) behind me, just after the first quarter mile(?).  Paced with them for the first mile and felt comfortable.

#1  6:17  Wanted to pace at about 6:15, so I wasn't too worried.

#2  6:33  In the second mile, Ted mentioned that I ought to leave them and pick it up a bit.

Into the third mile Sasha's chanting of "ta, ta, ta, ta" (from Monday) came to mind...and I sped up my leg turnover.

#3  6:14

#4  6:31  Paced with a guy ahead of me for the last mile (the next closest girl was more than a minute ahead).  Passed him but should have done it sooner.  Out kicked two men in the last stretch.  Next time push in from the corner and then hard at the straight-a-way.

6:23 Averaged pace.

Suggestions from Sasha:  Some thoughts. 3rd mile marker was off by about 7 seconds. So that would give you 6:21 for mile 3, and 6:24 for the last mile. Still even with this adjustment your pacing through the race is really odd. 1st mile was just right, 2nd way too slow, 3rd just right, last mile too slow especially considering that you kicked at the end. This is actually consistent with what I observed in the Uneventful Half. It seems that your mind drifts at times and you start running 20 seconds per mile slower than what your fitness would allow you.

To fix. Buy or borrow a measuring wheel (GPS is not good enough for this). Measure out a 3 mile course, as flat as possible, mark every quarter. Twice a week do tempo runs on it trying to hit every quarter not slower than any of the preceding ones. Start with 6:28 pace as a target (1:37 quarters), move it up gradually over time as the fitness increases.

You are so good...Sasha's ta ta ta ta made me tell him to shutup (a word I don't ever say...but at the end of a race when my husband is chanting at me) I guess I take him for granted and should be better at taking his coaching and not getting upset but I'm still not used to my personal trainer being my husband...Great race. I guess it's all relative but I can only dream of being as fast as you. I hope however that you get that stellar performance you are dreaming of.

Sasha, I look forward to your feedback! I spoke with Hawk & Cheryl Harper at today's Saturday trail run (are you familiar with trail 51 in the hills of Provo canyon?). Their advice was to give my speed/tempo workouts everything I've got (VO2Max) and if I die...so what! There have been a handful of speed workouts this past summer where I definitely pushed my limits. However, they are/have been few and far between. I think I'm afraid of not being able to finish...(whatever distance)

Races included! I tend to make races (especially), tempo workouts instead of pushing hard. I need to get past this. Anyhow, thanks for the advice. I'll see what I can do. Any idea how much I'd pay for a measuring wheel?

Sarah, you are amazing! Your capacity to accomplish all that you do for your children (and your husband) astounds me. On-top of everything you do, you are a great runner! Props go to you!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 11:21:16

You can get a measuring wheel at

http://www.ohwuala.com/tho/tr/product/10000-FT-BIG-WHEEL-WALKING-TAPE-MEASURE-1015701.html

for $21 + shipping.

For the races, you can just pick somebody out of your league and try to run with them for as long as you can, then coast to the finish if they drop you.

Sasha says that your Dad teaches horse riding. Could you give me some information about riding lessons...Do you know anyone that takes children? I'm toying with the idea of giving our little girl Jenny a few riding lessons for Christmas. She is 7.

From Jamie on Tue, Nov 27, 2007 at 11:39:50

Sarah, here are some websights for info on horseback riding lessons.

utahhorsedirectory.com (stable locations in Utah County)

welcome.net.au/lessons.htm (general info on lessons and pricing...not certain how this will compare to pricing in our county)

Melville Arabians is the closest stable to you, I think. They don't have a web address. An English (style of riding) trainer by the name of Susan (at 367-9492) can answer any of your questions.

My father, Ike Fitzgarrald, works out of Coyote Creek Equestrian Center in Lehi and instructs in English riding. He doesn't often school young riders, but you may call him with questions if you wish.

You can expect to pay probably anywhere from $25-$75 for a lesson. It will vary a good bit from one instructor to another. Lessons are typically given in half-hour to hour sessions. You may want to consider Western riding for a young rider in part because of the deep saddle and because it is a more casual style of riding.

Let me know if you need more info.

From Jamie on Tue, Nov 27, 2007 at 11:43:19

Oh, and I forgot to mention that students may choose to take part in group lessons, where a handful of riders take a lesson together. Anyhow, hope this helps.

This coming Saturday, I will be doing LA Freeway again with the Sojourners. You are welcome to join me. Distance is approximate.  Trail run in 18 degree weather, burrr!  Up to the Rock Pile, Prayer Circle, out Dry Canyon, back to North Orem Soccer Park on the Bonneville Shoreline trail.  Planned on running farther, however, had a weird thing happen!  My vision went bad every so often.  Mostly because my contacts would not stay in place (because of the cold temps).  This was a first.  Moderate effort (occasional hard pushes)...was able to hang with the faster guys much of the time.  Leroy was slow today...perhaps because of the race this past Thursday.  I think it was the first time I have ever found myself ahead of him (only in the last couple miles).  I asked him if he felt okay...I think he was offended.  Oops.

I am missing Sarah; many times we ran these trails together.

Fartlek workout with MAT (Michelle, Amber, Tom) and Ali this morning...good little group of speedsters!

Warmed up a couple miles.

Ten fartleks each about 2 minutes in duration.  (Quite different than the fartlek workouts I use to do with Sarah.)

Not too cold this morning and it helped I think.  The moon was full; that helped more!  Michelle ended up taking a dip in the stream!  No...not the fun kind and a muddy one at that.  Just another reason I avoid mid-run potty sessions at all costs.  Sorry Michelle...your a tough little chicka, if that makes you feel any better!  And hey, no worries for you...practice makes perfect.  If I'm having issues, my run is (at times) a done deal until I can take care of business.  It's not pretty.  Three weeks pregnant.

If you can't describe adequately on the blog then make sure we talk about it tomorrow morning in our run.

You did awesome this morning. I was wondering if you were going to say something about needing to wheel the workout. Let us know when you buy the wheel and we'll all do the 3 mile tempo with quarter splits as Sasha suggested(assuming you want company).

Ran 8(+) miles today with MAT.  Forgot to grab my purse while heading out the door.  Surprised that I was able to run okay without taking my inhaler before beginning.  Lungs were really tight in the first few miles and then slowly began to relax and open a little.  Ended up feeling a bit fatigued and tired following the run.  I am certain that I put my body under a good bit of stress.  Don't plan on doing it on a normal basis, however, good to know how I can expect things to go if I forget my inhaler again.  Didn't feel like the easy run that it should have been, but there is power in knowledge.

I just got an email from my buddy (Robert Blauer)who I challenged you to "chick" and it looks like you whomped him pretty good, beating him by almost a minute! He only ran a 26:23 so I just got done chastising him severely for his dismal showing!

Interestingly enough it looks like his son Ammon (25:31) and daughter Kiersten (25:36) finished just before and after you. Good Job!!!

From Jamie on Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 23:20:51

Tom, good to know that I beat him! Thanks for the challenge.

I didn't know that a girl was so close behind me in the last stretch...good thing I kicked well to the finish. Speaking of which, question: what's it called when a girl passes or beats another girl? Perhaps she got pp'd (picked off and/or passed). Or should it be pt'd (passed and/or ticked off)? Just something to chew on. Perhaps Michelle has some thoughts since she generally is known to do the picking and passing!?

Met MAT at the track today.  Michelle and Tom have a race Saturday so they did some pick-ups.  Amber has been fighting an injury; she took it easy.  There was a fierce S.F. wind today...especially toward the end of the workout.  I don't think I'll ever get use to it.  Brrr!

Warmed up for 25 minutes and then attempted a tempo run trying to hit all my quarters/laps evenly.  Didn't count laps in my head and had a hard time telling which lap I was on with my watch.

Ended up doing a few more tempo miles...for a couple reasons.  First, in getting my splits to be somewhat even, I was a lot slower than I had originally planned on being (1:37 quarters is what Sasha suggested I shoot for).  Second, this was a comfortable pace and it felt like I could have gone many more miles than I did.  From running the Uneventful-half in Provo, I can assume that another 6 or so, at this pace, is when I would start to tire.

The track wasn't as bad as I had remembered!  As a child, going in circles with my mom was about as boring as it got.  I'm glad it ended up being a positive experience.  I am certain it helped to have friends there with me.  Next time I'll work on making my splits faster (and once again more even).

Suggestions from Sasha:  Tempos should not be comfortable at all. They are not all out, but you should push them and feel a bit scared about having to keep it for a while. Next time, hit the first lap in 1:37. Then the next one, and so on. Keep them at 1:37 for as long as you can. When you cannot, stop. Also, 6 miles is too long, especially if you are struggling hitting the right pace. I would say 2 miles at 6:28 pace right now would do more for you than 6 at 7:00 - 7:10. Also, try not to do those alone if possible, get Tom or Michelle to pace you, and absolutely do not let them gap you at any point. In fact, if this helps, make a rule that if they challenge you to a high five and you fail in the next 20 seconds, your tempo ends right there. Jog, recover, then try again.

You are welcome for the ride! I am glad that you stayed with me on the track so I wasn't all by myself. I'll have to agree with you that the track wasn't so bad today. My excuse is probably that I didn't feel like I was going to throw up after each repeat! My hip still doesn't hurt. Its usually painful to get in and out of the car, and take off my shoes. Luckily it hasn't bothered me at all today! Great job on your tempo!

Great job on the very tough workout, especially having to do it on the treadmill! If I'm reading this correctly it looks like you cranked out 3 straight miles at 6:27, followed by 3 more mile repeats with a killer 6:11 on the last one! That's 6 miles total of seriously speedy running. Good work!

Ran (what felt like) an easy 10 miles this morning.  Michelle, at one point, told me had run just over a 7 minute mile.  Effort-wise, it didn't feel that fast.  I attribute it to the tail-wind.  Spanish Fork winter wind was in full effect, and it made me want to cry.  We had it at our back much of the time, but I knew that we'd have to face it on the way back, at some point.  The last 1-2 miles was awful!  I soaked in a hot bath for 15 minutes after getting home...that's pretty much the only way to warm up my hands quickly.  They tend to be the only thing that bothers me on a cold run.  And once cold, they stay cold.  If Michelle hadn't been with me, I wouldn't have run out in it this morning.  Sometimes I wonder why we put ourselves through it.  And in some sick-twisted way, I'm always glad we do.  Thanks Michelle.  It helps when misery has company.  Four weeks pregnant.

Met up with Amber, Michelle, and Ali this morning for an easy 8 mile run.  Had a hard time finding Amber's home, but eventually found the group.  Thank you for waiting for me ladies!

Did 8 strides (20 seconds each) and felt pretty good.  Trying to shake the sore throat I've had since last Friday.  It doesn't seem to be effecting me too much.  Michelle and I must have paid our dues yesterday to the S.F. wind-man because this morning wasn't too bad at all.

Met at Mt. Hey Jamie, I think my brother in law has a wheel if you want I could borrow it and we could mark out some courses on the road. It is alot easier to finish a workout on the road vs. the track, I think anyway. just let me know?

Total distance for today's run is approximate.  Two mile tempo run at the track; Michelle was nice enough to pace me.

(I got my measuring wheel in the mail last week but haven't been able to mark off a 3 mile flat course in quarters yet.  Hopefully before next week's tempo; I do prefer a tempo workout on the road to one done on the track.)

The goal (Sasha's recommendation) was to do 2 miles, or as many laps as I could, at an even 1:37 per lap.  Things went fairly well and next time I'll up my tempo to 3 miles.  My body's still fighting a cold, but doing a pretty good job at holding off some of the yuckier symptoms.

Warmed up for 25 minutes.

Quarter mile (splits/laps):

#1  1:39  (not quite fast enough...pick it up a bit)

#2  1:36

#3  1:37  (exactly where I'm wanting to be)

#4  1:37

Mile 6:29

#1  1:37

#2  1:38

#3  1:38

#4  1:37

Mile 6:30

Cool down with Amber for 30 minutes (Michelle finished her tempo and joined us the last few laps).

Best guess on mileage today; could have been more.  Ran on a trail in snow for 70% of the run.  Ended up meeting up with the Sojourners' after all.  We met at the mouth of Provo canyon and decided to run AWAY from the wind and that meant away from the scheduled run up the canyon.  No tears on my part, brrrr!  Cheryl was full of interesting stories and time passed quickly.

I need to be getting in more miles by warming up before the group meets, if I'm wanting to do more than 10-12 miles on Saturdays.  About half of the group did 8 miles; most Sojourners' take it way easy during the winter.  So easy that there were only about 7 of us this morning.  (During the summer it's typically around 30 runners.)  I am trying to break myself of this exact habit.  I'm glad I ended up meeting up with them and look forward to it every week.

Quite the morning, let me tell you!  Drove to Ali's and waited outside for a couple minutes before lightly knocking on her front door.  No answer.  Went back to my car to check my cell phone to see if she had called and canceled because of the snow.  No phone, forgot it at home.  Figured if I hurried, I could still make it to Loafer Elementary to run with Michelle, Amber, and McKenzie.

Knew I was going to be a bit late, but hoped that the other ladies would be too (considering the conditions).  Arrived about five minutes late.  Michelle's van was parked off to the side of the road and McKenzie's suv was in the parking lot.  They were no where to be found.  Drove around a few minutes, saw no one.  Must have missed them.  Decided to drive back to Spanish Fork to get in my run because it wasn't snowing as hard there.  And no wind!

Talked myself into picking up a couple of groceries before my run (instead of after) because I was already in the car, driving.  In and out in less than 15 minutes and then drove back home.  Then came the revelation...it was quarter to the hour.  THE hour being the seven o'clock hour (in other words, a quarter to seven.)  Good heavens...I must have set my alarm for 5:20am instead of 4:20am.

I was late!  Jumped out of the car...I'd grab the groceries later.  Began a solo run.  Saw Tom at one point and said hi.  He was heading out for a few miles on his own before getting in a few more with Kim.  I also saw my Bishop and he commended me for my dedication.  His non-verbal communication..."you've got a few screws loose."  No question about that this morning!

There were a few times when I found myself tappin'.  (Translation...uncontrolled flailing and sliding of the feet on snow or ice.  Or an attempt to slip and fall.)  I came really close to falling the second time, going around a corner.  In my mind I pictured a speed skater virtually horizontal to the ice, going around a turn.  By keeping my little feet movin', I managed to avoid a fall.  Have you ever seen someone biff it or come close to biffing it?  I laughed at myself wishing I could have seen how I must have looked.  Always funny to see!

Yesterday, I mentioned to Ali that my body was feeling out of it.  Perhaps because Phillip came down with the flu last night...and I'm next.  Or for other reasons...

Didn't get in a full 8 miles because I had to get back.  I'm glad that I got in the miles I did.  One thing is certain, I'm a mess!

Speed workout at the BYU indoor track this morning with Michelle and Josse.  Josse was there for moral support; Michelle was determined to run laps at a 6 mile pace until she puked.

Side note:  That's a funny concept to me.  I can't imagine most people would set out for a goal like that and even fewer people that could actually make themselves do it.  I have experienced dry-heaving (or my body's attempt to puke as a result from a hard run) only once.  It wasn't a race; I don't even know how I got myself to run that hard by myself.  It's certainly not typical of me.

We warmed up outside.  (Great weather in Provo, by the way...loved it!)  We met up with Josse and then went inside to get ready for the tempo.  After a bit of stretching and a few laps to check things out, we began.  I wanted to keep Michelle's pace for as long as I could.  Ended up doing the first 3 (of 5) laps for the first mile.  Cheered her on, recovered.  Picked it up again with her for another 2 laps.  Recovered again then ran a final lap with her.  So 1.2 miles total speed work for me.

Cooled down a few laps on the track and then headed out to get in some miles on the streets of Provo.  I think my total time is accurate, but I started and stopped it at various points during this morning's workout.  It should be close.

It has been a very long time since I have felt as heavy and slow as I did today.  I guess the last time I was sick, there was one run in particular when I was seriously out of it.  Phillip has been pretty sick the past couple of days, but I've done a good job at avoiding whatever he's had.  More than anything this morning, my legs felt really heavy.  I hope this is just a bad day and it's not down-hill from here.

Ran along the canal with the Sojourners' today.  Alexis threw up hard during the night and was (understandably) clingy.  Phillip's stomach bug got to her, hope Luke isn't next.  I'm so glad that I've managed to avoid it...knock on wood.  She woke up when I was getting ready to go and started fussing...Phillip didn't want me gone quite as long this morning because she's sick.  Long-story short, I did 8(+) miles with the group and called it quits.  Felt much better (and lighter) today than I did yesterday.

I regret not running Monday & Tuesday.  For one of his "Christmas presents", Phillip asked that I not run those two days.  Luke was sick and I reluctantly obliged.  I then woke up sick on Wednesday and it lasted trough most of Thursday.  I wished I had not taken Monday & Tuesday off.

Still sick with the flu in the morning.  Started feeling a little better in the evening and forced myself into a 10 mile run when Phillip got home from work.  Babs, Cold Play, and Deaf Leopard (in that order) helped in the feat.  I started feeling better the last 3 miles and suppose I could chalk that up to the hype received from listening to Deaf Leopard.  THANK YOU!

10 miles while sick, you must be pretty tuff! Hey, Def leppard now there's a great 80's band. My wife and i went to Vegas with a bunch of friends in sept to see them. They were with Styx and Foreigner, was an awesome concert. Hope you get feeling better, it seems to be hitting everyone this year.

I considered my options of either running outside in 12'F temps or hitting the tread-mill.  Tread-mill won and I did an easy 10.  Feeling considerably better.

I think I have a clue as to why you have a hard time sustaining a fast pace, while if you are to slow down a bit, you can hold that forever. Are you sleeping enough, and are you getting in enough carbs right after your runs?

From Jamie on Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 15:21:41

Sasha, I don't function well without at least 7 hours of sleep. It's a constant struggle to get enough. I can't run in the evenings (for the most part). The morning, before my husband leaves for work, is my only option.

I'm six weeks pregnant. Just found out, for sure, on Christmas Eve. I don't experience many pregnancy symptoms (no morning sickness at all), but my babies tend to (literally) suck energy out of me. I tend to be pretty tired throughout my pregnancies.

I haven't been putting in any long runs since St. George. I don't think that I now have the endurance that I tend to have during the summer (I did 16-23 milers every Saturday).

I always get sick a lot during the winter. It has always been this way. I'm allergic to all animals, and get hay-fever once in a while during the spring and summer months. But I think I get sick so often (once a month in the winter) because I ride horses every Friday. I love it and hate to give it up. But because of this, I deal with allergies, asthma and fighting illness all winter long. When I do get sick my asthma tends to make everything worse and last longer.

Don't think carbs are an issue. I eat fairly well.

Congratulations! Being pregnant makes a lot of difference in how you handle your training. Probably a good idea to just relax and play it by ear. Still run consistently, gradually reducing the mileage, and do everything at a slow pace. Sarah has had a good experience tapering down to about half of the regular volume, slowing down the pace by feel, but running until the day she delivered.

Regarding carbs - it is very important to get them in within the first hour after you finish your run. Also, throughout the day, if you feel you are losing concentration, it is time for a healthy high carb snack.

Congratulations Jamie! It was really good to see you this morning. I am almost half tempted to try and get pregnant right now too. I am really baby hungry and I think it would be really fun to have a prego running buddy.

From Jamie on Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 18:26:10

Sasha, I had planned on doing so with my running. Nothing crazy, just try to stay in shape. I successfully ran through my first two and felt great the whole time. Continue to give your feedback; I enjoy your thoughts and the experience you so willingly lend. Thank you!

Amberosia, A pregnancy buddy would be wonderful. By all means, if it fits for you and your hubby, I'd love to have someone to (eventually) shuffle with.

Amber, I don't know why I typed Amberosia. Sort of funny!

Sasha, what do you know of a womans heart rate increasing when she is pregnant? Do you know by how much? I've read a little but not found specifics.

From Lybi on Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 19:27:14

Congratulations! What an amazing Christmas present! I love that Sasha was trying to help you figure out why you weren't running as fast on your tempos...;)

Regarding heart rate and pregnancy, one thing I've heard is that the white blood cell count goes way up during pregnancy, which means your blood has a lower concentration of red blood cells, which makes it harder for your blood to carry oxygen. That would make your heart rate go up--I don't know how much though.

Congratulations! Very exciting news.

Congrats on the exciting news!

Jamie:

I would imagine everybody's heart rate would increase differently. If I remember right, Sarah's resting HR goes up from 66 to 84 when she is pregnant towards the end, and at times can be even as high as 95. We have never measured her exercise HR while pregnant.

Kim:

I'll take a look at your training shortly. If anybody wants to have their training reviewed, make sure to post on the forum in the Training Review Requests. In the past, I've been able to look at every blog almost daily and leave a comment. Now I am outnumbered, but fortunately we have many other runners who could do the same. If you post on the board, your request will not be missed.

Ran L.A. Freeway with the Sojourners' today.  Felt a bit tired but performed well, considering I just got over the flu on Thursday.

Perhaps not running most of my normal miles this week helped my legs to feel fresh and up to the challenge.  Ali, Michelle, and Amber all ran part of the course.  It was good to have my friends with me; I've been a bit out of it for most of the week.

Ran the normal course but added on from Rock Canyon by going north 1 more mile on the trail and then 1 mile through the neighborhoods back to the temple.  Brandon led the way (pretty much throughout the whole run) and a guy by the name of Travis joined us.  It was good to have them; our last mile was about an 8 minute pace and I was so DONE when I got to my car.  I think the last time I ran for that long (time-wise) was the St. George marathon.  Anyhow, great run.  Great running friends.  Great times.

Happy New Year's Eve!!  I'm so glad that Amber was able to meet up with me this morning.  I thought that there was a good chance I'd be running solo.  We did a loop in S.F. and though the roads were pretty bad at times, conversation helped the miles go quickly.  We saw Ali when we were headed toward Amber's.  She was running home from the gym and joined us for a bit, but all of us were close to the end of our workout so she turned back onto Canyon to head for home.  I was pleasantly surprised that the temp this morning wasn't worse.  The next two days are suppose to be pretty cold and the thought of running in it makes me cringe.  One cold winter month down!  A good two more to go  :(

I am (eight weeks) pregnant!  I'm feeling pretty good for the most part.  Due date is August 14.  Perhaps that will change at my first appointment, at the end of January, when I have my first ultra-sound and they measure everything.  Although I was pretty sure that I was pregnant a couple weeks ago, I didn't take a pregnancy test until Christmas Eve.  Phillip found out Christmas day.  We are pretty excited.

Congratulations on the pregnancy!! You have a beautiful family.

I have enjoyed (and will continue to enjoy) reading your workouts and hope to be as fast as you someday. Thanks for the inspiration!

Shauna, thanks! I will be the one needing inspiration in the weeks that come. Happy running!
