Personal:

Married.  Stay at home mom.  My husband and I have 2 daughters and 4 sons.  And I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

With a seemingly impossible long-term goal of running a sub 3 hour marathon, the following scriptures give me hope:

In your patience possess ye your souls. Luke 21:19

But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. James 1:4

But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. Romans 8:25

Submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord.         Mosiah 24:15

And Ezra teaches that discipline and patience are born of disappointment.

I considered my options of either running outside in 12'F temps or hitting the tread-mill.  Tread-mill won and I did an easy 10.  Feeling considerably better.

I think I have a clue as to why you have a hard time sustaining a fast pace, while if you are to slow down a bit, you can hold that forever. Are you sleeping enough, and are you getting in enough carbs right after your runs?

From Jamie on Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 15:21:41

Sasha, I don't function well without at least 7 hours of sleep. It's a constant struggle to get enough. I can't run in the evenings (for the most part). The morning, before my husband leaves for work, is my only option.

I'm six weeks pregnant. Just found out, for sure, on Christmas Eve. I don't experience many pregnancy symptoms (no morning sickness at all), but my babies tend to (literally) suck energy out of me. I tend to be pretty tired throughout my pregnancies.

I haven't been putting in any long runs since St. George. I don't think that I now have the endurance that I tend to have during the summer (I did 16-23 milers every Saturday).

I always get sick a lot during the winter. It has always been this way. I'm allergic to all animals, and get hay-fever once in a while during the spring and summer months. But I think I get sick so often (once a month in the winter) because I ride horses every Friday. I love it and hate to give it up. But because of this, I deal with allergies, asthma and fighting illness all winter long. When I do get sick my asthma tends to make everything worse and last longer.

Don't think carbs are an issue. I eat fairly well.

Congratulations! Being pregnant makes a lot of difference in how you handle your training. Probably a good idea to just relax and play it by ear. Still run consistently, gradually reducing the mileage, and do everything at a slow pace. Sarah has had a good experience tapering down to about half of the regular volume, slowing down the pace by feel, but running until the day she delivered.

Regarding carbs - it is very important to get them in within the first hour after you finish your run. Also, throughout the day, if you feel you are losing concentration, it is time for a healthy high carb snack.

Congratulations Jamie! It was really good to see you this morning. I am almost half tempted to try and get pregnant right now too. I am really baby hungry and I think it would be really fun to have a prego running buddy.

From Jamie on Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 18:26:10

Sasha, I had planned on doing so with my running. Nothing crazy, just try to stay in shape. I successfully ran through my first two and felt great the whole time. Continue to give your feedback; I enjoy your thoughts and the experience you so willingly lend. Thank you!

Amberosia, A pregnancy buddy would be wonderful. By all means, if it fits for you and your hubby, I'd love to have someone to (eventually) shuffle with.

Amber, I don't know why I typed Amberosia. Sort of funny!

Sasha, what do you know of a womans heart rate increasing when she is pregnant? Do you know by how much? I've read a little but not found specifics.

From Lybi on Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 19:27:14

Congratulations! What an amazing Christmas present! I love that Sasha was trying to help you figure out why you weren't running as fast on your tempos...;)

Regarding heart rate and pregnancy, one thing I've heard is that the white blood cell count goes way up during pregnancy, which means your blood has a lower concentration of red blood cells, which makes it harder for your blood to carry oxygen. That would make your heart rate go up--I don't know how much though.

Congratulations! Very exciting news.

Congrats on the exciting news!

Jamie:

I would imagine everybody's heart rate would increase differently. If I remember right, Sarah's resting HR goes up from 66 to 84 when she is pregnant towards the end, and at times can be even as high as 95. We have never measured her exercise HR while pregnant.

Kim:

I'll take a look at your training shortly. If anybody wants to have their training reviewed, make sure to post on the forum in the Training Review Requests. In the past, I've been able to look at every blog almost daily and leave a comment. Now I am outnumbered, but fortunately we have many other runners who could do the same. If you post on the board, your request will not be missed.
